ABOUT, AND WRITING FOR, THE WEST AFRICAN JOURNAL OF MEDICINE

The West African Journal of Medicine (WAJM), a joint publication of the West African College of Physicians and the West African College of Surgeons, is for clinicians, scientists and others interested in the field of medicine and the medical sciences. The Journal which accepts articles in English and French is indexed/abstracted in EMBASE, Excerpta Medica, Medline/Index Medicus, African Journals on Line and African Index Medicus. The mission of WAJM is to educate clinicians, improve the life and care of patients, stimulate and disseminate findings from research in medicine and allied biomedical sciences and related areas and provide a forum for the documentation and exchange of information in the clinical and biomedical sciences. The Journal accepts only articles that have neither been published nor are being considered for publication by any other journal. WAJM publishes reports of experimental and clinical work on all aspects of research in medicine, dentistry and related subjects and disciplines. Manuscripts must be written in the form suggested in the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals: Writing and Editing for Biomedical Publication by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, 2006 A detailed write up on “Information for Authors” is given at the website of the ICMJE . This article should be consulted by all potential medical authors. WAJM will publish contributions dealing with all aspects of medicine and dentistry and related disorders particularly relating to African and black peoples. Articles submitted to WAJM may fall into one of the following types: original research work, reviews and meta analysis, brief communications including case reports, patient vignettes, education about medical disorders, conference reports as well as editorials and commentaries. The Journal will also publish book reviews, notices and Association news or events and continuing medical education matters and issues. The full manuscript, which should be in French or UK English with abstract in both French and English and of no more than 250 words, is to be submitted by email to : wajmeditorinchief @wajm.org with a copy to: wajmeditorinchief @yahoo.com. using point size 12 of New Times Roman) along with illustrations. Manuscripts should be typed double spaced throughout (including references and tables) and sent to the Editor-in-Chief at the above address. The manuscript should be organized under the following sections: Title page; Abstract; Keywords (using MeSH of Index Medicus); Abbreviations; Introduction; Subjects, Materials and Methods; Results; Discussion; Acknowledgements; Duality of Interest (if applicable); References; Tables; Figures; Legends to Tables and Figures. Appropriate variations from this outline apply to such contributions as editorials, commentaries, prose and poetry etc. Abstracts of original contributions including case reports should be structured into Background; Objectives; Methods; Results and Conclusion.

GENERAL INFORMATION
The West African Journal of Medicine (WAJM) is a publication of the West African College of Physicians and the West African College of Surgeons for clinicians, and others interested in the field of medicine and medical sciences. Contributions are categorized into the following main groups: review articles, original research papers, brief communications and case reports, Medical Education, Reviews and metanalyses, Conference and workshop reports, editorials and commentaries and correspondence or letters to the Editor. The Journal accepts only articles that have neither been published nor are being considered for publication by any other journal.

ABRIDGED INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS
WAJM publishes reports of experimental and clinical work on all aspects of research in medicine, dentistry and related subjects and disciplines. Manuscripts must be written in the form suggested in the Uniform Requirements for manuscripts submitted to Biomedical Journals”. A word count must be provided both for abstracts (a maximum of 250 words) and the main text (exclusive of references, tables and figure legends). Data should not be sliced to the size of the smallest publishable unit but must be a complete documentation of a study. Contributors are requested to disclose any conflicts of interest that might bias their work. They should acknowledge in the manuscript all financial support for the work and other personal connections. WAJM will publish contributions dealing with all aspects of medicine and dentistry and related disorders particularly relating to Africans. Articles submitted to WAJM may fall into one of the following types: original research work, reviews and meta analysis, brief communications including case reports, patient vignettes, education about medical disorders, conference reports as well as editorials and commentaries. The Journal will also publish book reviews, notices and Association news or events. Authors should submit an electronic version of the manuscript (using point size 12 of New Times Roman) and illustrations to the EIC at wajmeditorinechief@wajm.org The manuscript should be organized under the following sections: Title page, Abstract, Keywords (using MeSH of Index Medicus), Abbreviations, Introduction, Subjects, Materials, and Methods Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, Duality of Interest, References, Tables, Figures, Legends to Tables and Figures. Appropriate variations from this outline apply to such contributions as editorials, commentaries, prose and poetry etc. Abstracts of original contributions should be structured into Background; Objectives; Methods; Results and Conclusions. The title page should contain the title of the article, the names and affiliations of the authors as well as a suggested running title and the details of the corresponding author. Two versions of the manuscript should be sent by email: one with the title page and the other without the title page. The title page should contain the title of the article, the names, degrees, appointments and affiliations of the authors as well as a suggested running title and the details of the corresponding author. References with Journal titles spelt as in Index Medicus, tables and legends should be provided in line with the “Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to Biomedical Journals” (1).

SUBMISSION CHECKLIST FOR AUTHORS
Corresponding authors should ensure that:

1. All parts of the manuscript are typed double-     spaced using Times New Roman
2. Each section is begun on a new page
3. The following sequence is followed: Title page,     Abstract, Keywords, Abbreviations, Introduction,     Subjects, Materials and Methods, Results,     Discussion,Acknowledgements, Duality of     Interest, References, Tables, Figures, and Legends     to Tables and Figures;each started on a separate     page.
4. Abstract is structured in no more than 250     words,(include a word count).
5. Four to ten keywords (from Index Medicus     MESH) are provided.
6. References, figures, and tables are cited     consecutively in text.
7. High quality illustration clearly numbered and     labeled for orientation are provided on final     acceptance.
8. They have included permission to reproduce     previously published materials or permission to use     illustration that may identify human subject.
9. A cover letter stating the following is included:
    i) originality of work
    ii) type of article (Vide infra)
    iii) approval of final copy of manuscript by all     authors and signed by all authors.
    iv) Name, postal and e-mail addresses, telephone     and fax numbers of corresponding author.
10. They acknowledge potential conflict of interest     and financial support.
11. They keep for their own use a copy of everything        being submitted.
12. When finally accepted, they enclose signed        transfer of copyright and other forms.
